From Mrs POTTS to achieving the DAME of honour, Angela Lansbury came a long way.
MRS LANSBURY was an iconic lady who entertained the audience with her charm and beautiful voice, passed away in her sleep at the age of 96. Dame Angela Lansbury was famous and got international fame for the crime series MURDER SHE WROTE. The Irish -British- American actress and singer gained popularity across nations.
A statement was released by the family “The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep in Los Angeles, just five days shy of her 97th Birthday”. She is survived by three children Anthony, Deirdre and David, and also, she was surrounded by her five grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with her brother who is also a producer Edgar Lansbury.
Mrs Lansbury was born in London in 1925, she was the daughter of an Irish actress Moyna Macgill and his father Mr Edgan Lansbury was an English Politician. Lansbury attended a local school, and from there, her journey started. She did a stage appearance there in a Production of Mary Of Scotland, she took dancing and acting classes and in 1939 she attended the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.
In 1944, she got her first role as a ‘saucy maid’ in the film Gaslight. Success came easy to her, at the Oscars, she managed to bag a nomination in the Best actor Supporting category for this film. By 1960, she was 24 films old. When asked if she did a role she was desperate for, she said Elvis Presley, the mother in Blue Hawaii was the one role she was quite interested in. Another role, which was highly appreciated by the critics was her role as Laurence Harvey’s mother in the thriller drama THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE.
Her performance garnered the eyes of the critics, and many went on to describe her performance as the “strongest, most memorable and best picture ever made.” This film got her second Golden Globe award in Supporting Category and also another Oscar Nomination was added to her achievement list.
Despite achieving so much success, she never lost her interest in stage production. In 1971, she did a film with Disney titled “BEDKNOBS AND THE BROOMSTICKS” and also lend her voice as MRS POTTS in the animated film Beauty and the Beast, she also delighted her fans by making a small presence in THE MARY POPPINS RETURNS.
In April 2014, she was coined a DAME by The Late Queen of England, she was very proud of this title as this was something different from the awards she received. Not only this, she was titled “THE QUEEN OF BROADWAY” and in the Span of 75 years of her career, she received five TONY AWARDS.
