The Oscar-winning actor who starred in “Broadcast News” and “Children of a Lesser God” has passed away at 71.
William McChord Hurt’s son, Will, told the Associated Press that his father died on March 13th. He said his father died peacefully among the family. He died at his home in Portland, Oregon. William Hurt was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in 2018.
The Oscar-nominated actor played Vietnam veteran Nick Carlton in 1983’s “The Big Chill,” making him one of the most well-known actors of the 1980s.
The actor, the son of a State Department officer, was born on March 20, 1950, in Washington, D.C., and leaves behind four children.
Hurt garnered three Oscar nominations in a row for his parts in 1985’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God,” and 1987’s “Broadcast News,” in which he played a prisoner in a Brazilian jail.
In the science-fiction thriller “Altered States,” in which he played a psycho-pathologist investigating schizophrenia and experimenting with sensory deprivation, the Julliard School actor made his film debut in 1980 as a psycho-pathologist investigating schizophrenia and experimenting with sensory deprivation.
Hurt made his real-life acting debut in the 1981 thriller “Body Heat,” in which he played small-town lawyer Ned Racine, who is persuaded to commit murder by Kathleen Turner’s Matty Walker.
Hurt rose to prominence by portraying bizarre characters such as a Russian cop in “Gorky Park” (1983) and a wealthy and pompous husband in Woody Allen’s “Alice” (1990).
In 1971, William Hurt married Mary Beth Hurt for the first time. In a high-profile court battle six years later, Jennings claimed she was Hurt’s common-law wife under South Carolina law and so entitled to a share of his earnings.
Despite the fact that a judge in New York ruled in Hurt’s favour, the actor’s relationship with fame remained contentious. Matlin detailed physical and drug abuse during their relationship in her 2009 memoir. Hurt later apologised.
To a younger audience, he is most known for his portrayal of Hulk nemesis Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He originally appeared in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” alongside Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner.
As Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross, he appeared in “Captain America: Civil War” in 2016, “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Black Widow” in 2021. Hurt starred alongside Billy Bob Thornton as reclusive lawyer Donald Cooperman in Amazon’s courtroom drama “Goliath” from 2016 until 2021.
