Live updates from the Monsoon Session of Parliament in 2022: Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha are likely to resume their functions at 11 a.m. on Thursday. This comes after the proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were disrupted for the third day Wednesday due to continued protests by opposition members demanding an urgent discussion over the hike in prices and the imposition of GST on some daily-use items. These members of the opposition in the Parliament are demanding an urgent discussion over price rises and the imposition of GST on some daily-use items.
On Wednesday, Congress accused the government of avoiding a discussion on the issues of rising prices and an increase in the rates of the goods and services tax (GST). In response, senior ministers hit back and asked the Opposition to follow norms, as the presiding officers of both Houses have expressed readiness to hold a discussion. The proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were completely washed out, while the proceedings in the Lower House were adjourned twice before the Chair adjourned it for the day just after 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Piyush Goyal, Pralhad Joshi, and Smriti Irani, ministers in the Union government, have criticized the opposition, and more specifically the Congress, claiming that the party has a “destructive” attitude toward democracy.
In a separate turn of events in Parliament, the government reported to the lower house of parliament that militants in the Valley have caused the deaths of 21 non-Muslim Kashmiris and outsiders since August 5, 2019, but that no Kashmiri Pandit has fled the Valley as a result of the violence (since the said date). Terrorists have been responsible for the deaths of 128 members of the security forces and 118 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir between the dates of August 5, 2019, and July 9, 2022. Five Kashmiri Pandits were among the 118 civilians who were killed, and 16 people killed belonged to other Hindu or Sikh communities. In a written response to a question, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai assured the Lok Sabha that no pilgrims had been killed during this time period.
