The SC on Friday protected Zee anchor Rohit Ranjan from detention in cases brought against him due to a news report about Congressman Rahul Gandhi.
In its ruling, a vacation bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and J. K. Maheshwari granted him temporary relief and said that the Central Agency’s office will be used to serve the Union of India. An interim order will be in place in the interim prohibiting the respondent authorities from using coercion to arrest the petitioner in connection with the anchoring/telecast of DNA on July 1, 2022.
Senior Advocate Luthra, who was representing him, had informed the court that Ranjan had been detained by Noida Police, released on bail, and was now being sought by Chhattisgarh Police.
On July 5, Ranjan tweeted that Chhattisgarh Police officers had come to his house to arrest him without notifying their local counterparts. The same day, the Noida Police detained him for questioning in relation to a complaint made against two of his coworkers in a charge of the Zee Media Corporation regarding the allegedly altered video.

In his petition, he claimed that a trainee producer handled a video that the channel had acquired from another news organisation. The show was retracted and an apology was made on air after the channel realised there were factual errors.
