More on the rare black tiger from Odisha:
The initial video was shot by IFS Sushanta Nanda. Later, a clearer video showing the magnificent tiger was provided by IFS Praveen Kawan. It was indeed mesmerizing and a sight to behold.
This special tiger is found in very small populations in Simlipal. A scientist further explained that it was because of very rare genetic mutations in the tiger species. They are pseudo- melanistic tigers as well as extremely rare. That is why their numbers are so small.
It is a different kind of pigmentation and not a true melanism. Due to a restricted gene pool in the area, such stately and iconic beasts are found here although in small numbers.
As per Wikipedia, this kind of mutation is called pseudo- melanism. Due to this the black stripes are so close together that the tawny orangish background is barely visible giving it a regal black look.
Such a marvelous beast was first noted in 2007 in Similipal Tiger Reserve. After then, a few more such tigers were documented.
People were left stunned by this beautiful creation of nature. Many people asked for more information while others shared articles and artworks depicting the rare black tigers. People immediately took the internet by storm to share their positive reactions.
Many people also urged for more “scientific documentation” of the rare mutations.
