Kremlin proposes peace talks
Kremlin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said in a statement on Wednesday, that Russia has presented a draft containing the terms for further peace talks to Ukraine and are now awaiting Kyiv’s response.
The draft Is said to contain the demands of Russia in “absolutely clear and elaborate wording”, as a part of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
Peskov told reporters in a conference call on Wednesday that the draft has been sent and Kyiv’s response is yet to be received by Kremlin.
Kremlins press secretary Dmitry Peskov refused to add any comments but he did blame Ukraine for its slow progress in negotiations, deeming that “ the dynamic of the work on the Ukrainian side leaves much to be desired, the Ukrainians do not great inclination to intensify the negotiation process”.
Kiev’s standpoint
At the last peace talks held between Ukraine and Russia last month in Istanbul, Ukraine had presented Moscow with their own draft containing demands for the peace talk.
The negotiations back then had been unsuccessful, reluctance from either sides of the government had failed the purpose of the talks that was to end the war in Ukraine.
For the fresh set of draft sent by Russia to Ukraine , Kiev’s response on the peace talks is yet to be received by Kremlin.
Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously said that if the soldiers entrenched in Mariupol were killed then there would be no further peace talks.
The connection between the statement given by Ukraine’s President and the current scenario of the draft sent to Kiev by Russia, has not been verified yet.
Conclusion
As Russia is trying to speed up the process of peace talks, Kyiv’s response is yet to be determined. The continual battering taken by Ukraine since the beginning of the war may have soured the situation between Kremlin and Kiev.
Previously Ukraine has been eager to propagate peace talks, but now it seems the roles have been reversed. The delay in Kiev’s response is an important indicator of this issue.
With the beginning of the Battle for Donbas and new disclosure policies being formed by Russian Defense Ministry on Troop casualties in Ukraine, it is possible that Russia may want to end the war in order to prevent further losses.
