Junior athletics coach has accused Haryana Sports Minister of sexual harassment
On Friday, Chandigarh Police lodged a complaint against Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh at the request of a junior athletics coach who alleged that the minister had sexually harassed her.
The allegations were made at a press conference held at the opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) office on Thursday, but Singh denied the allegations and called for an independent probe.
The woman had participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics and was recruited as a junior coach n Haryana Sports Department under the government’s outstanding sportsperson scheme in September this year.
She complained to the SSP and hopes to get justice. The complaint was submitted to SP Shruti Arora. She later met with SSP Manisha Chaudhary along with SP Shruti Arora.Â
The athletics coach also told the reporters that she will also try to seek an appointment with the Haryana Chief Minister. She said she is the daughter of Haryana and this country, and she hopes that the government will give her time and listen to what she has gone through.
Sexual misconduct incident
She stated that the former hockey captain Sandeep Singh, from Pehowa in Kurukshetra, had first seen her at a gym and then contacted her on Instagram. The MLA kept texting her to meet him regarding the pending national games certificate. She mentioned that the federation misplaced her certificate and she has been taking it up with the authorities concerned. Therefore, she agreed to meet him at his residence-cum-office with some other documents she had and alleged that when she went there, the minister indulged in sexual misconduct.
When Singh was questioned about the allegations, he said they were baseless and wanted an independent probe.
On Thursday, the Indian National Lok Dal demanded that the Manohar Lal Khattar government immediately sack sitting BJP MLA Sandeep Singh and set up a Special Investigation Team to probe the matter. Rohtak former Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hudda demanded an impartial inquiry into the matter, while he was being questioned about the allegations leveled against the state minister.
Need for Independent Probe
A police officer said that the complaint filed against the Haryana Sports Minister was marked to Sector 26 police station SHO for investigation. The SHP will examine all aspects of the complaint.
After lodging the complaint, the woman coach, who was a member of the Rio Olympics Indian women’s squad was assured an impartial probe. She expressed her concerns regarding her security as she has been receiving intimidating messages on her social media accounts. She stopped attending phone calls. She said that the minister harassed her between February and November in his office and other places. Once he asked her to meet him in sector 7. Mostly he engaged with her through social media.
The coach mentioned to the police that she was forced to give an undertaking that she would fetch medals in an international event. If she fails to do so, she will be shifted. She recently got transferred to Jhajjar, her home district, where there is no athletics track. In fact, she mentioned that many others are also being harassed in the department.
