Youtube has taken down Sidhu Moosewala’s latest song SYL which was released on June 23. The song discussed the river dispute in Punjab.
On June 23, the song was released on Sidhu Moosewala’s channel. Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL), the popular river dispute, was discussed in this song. This was the first song released under his name after his assassination. Though the song has been taken down on Youtube it is available on other music platforms like Spotify.
Sutlej-Yamuna Link dispute is between Punjab and Harayana for their share in the Ravi-Beas river. This dispute has been going on for four decades. Punjab demands a reassessment of its share in the river while Haryana wants to first build the canal over the state river and then consider its share. The river is 214 kilometers long and currently, there is no construction going on due to the dispute.
Moosewala’s song had 27 million views and 3.3 million likes before it was taken down. The song was produced by music producer MXRCI. The visuals in the video displayed pictures of several militants, including Balwinder Singh Jatana. He was considered ‘A Sikh liberation hero’, he was shot dead at Chandigarh in July 1990 over the Sutlej- Yamuna Link dispute. He was a member of pro-Khalistan Babbar Khalsa. The video also hinted at undivided Punjab, farmer agitations, and the 1984 riots. The song had 1 million views in 30 minutes of its release.
Youtube has not mentioned the reasons for taking down the song, but officials reported that it was taken down on special request. It was also stated that the song violated community guidelines. Currently, if you click on the video link a message appears, “This content is not available on this country domain due to a legal complaint from the government.”
Sidhu Moosewala’s songs discussed political issues very frequently. He was a politician and a singer. He was always appreciated for portraying the most complicated issues with his excellent music. His assassination has been a shock for the entire country, but his music has left an imprint on everyone and will always be remembered.
