Sikhs Attacked In New York – Two Sikh men, who went out for an early morning walk on April 12th, 2022, were assaulted and robbed in New York’s Richmond Hills area.
Astonishingly, the attack happened in the same locality where an elderly member of the Sikh community, Nirmal Singh, was punched in an unprovoked assault earlier this month.
The Consul General of India in New York took to Twitter to share his opinion about the incident and wrote,
“The assault on two Sikh gentlemen in Richmond Hills, New York is deplorable. We have approached the local authorities and the New York City Police Department about the matter. “
It also stated that one culprit has been arrested and that it is ready to provide every assistance to the victims.
The attack on the Sikhs happened on the same day that an unidentified gunman opened fire on a Brooklyn subway injuring 16 people.
Video footage has been shared on social media showing a group of locals and police personnel surrounding the victims.
One of the injured is seen sitting on the side of the road leaning on a pole, while another is standing next to him, covering his wound near his eye with a cloth.
In the video, the two Sikh men are seen without turbans on their heads as well.
The Sikh Coalition said that it is in direct contact with the New York Police Department Hate Crimes Task Force, which has informed them that one suspect is in custody while a search is on for another one.
It added, “Law enforcement believes both men were targeted for being Sikh, and the attacks are being investigated as anti-Sikh hate crimes.”
Commenting on the attack, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards said that it is “another difficult day” in the Richmond Hill area “as we learn of a second attack on a Sikh neighbor—days after Mr. Singh’s assault.
” New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar took to Twitter and said,
“As the first Punjabi American ever elected to the New York State Office, she, in “unequivocal terms,” stresses that there is zero-tolerance for hate crimes against the Sikh American community in New York State.”
She also said that she had spoken to the New York Police Department after both the incidents of Sikhs Attacked In New York and was calling for “both incidents to be delved into as hate crimes” and that the lawbreakers should be brought in front of the law.
