Survival South Korean drama series Squid Game made history with 14 Emmy nominations.
When the Emmy nominations were announced on 12 July, the audience wasn’t surprised to see the drama garnering 14 incredible nominations making them the first ever non-English language series to achieve such a feat. The Netflix hit series now stands up against other popular U.S. shows like Stranger Things, Euphoria, Succession, Severance, Yellowjackets, and Ozark in one of the main categories of the event: Outstanding Drama Series.
Lee Jung-Jae, a divorced chauffeur and compulsive gambler, has earned a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor. The Writer and Director of Netflix Blockbuster Squid Game, Hwang Dong Hyuk, also received two main category nominations for Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series and Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series, respectively.
Korean model and actress, Jung Ho-Yeon has also earned herself a nomination at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series. Meanwhile, Park Hae-soo and Oh Young-soo have been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series. Lee Yoo-mi is up for Outstanding Guest Actress as well.
In addition to these, the show has also received nods for the creative category like Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Song for composer Jung Jae-il, who has notably composed for Oscar-winning movie Parasite and various award-winning movie Okja. Other nominations include Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Contemporary Program, Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series, Cinematography For A Single-Camera Series, Stunt Performance, and Special Visual Effects In A Single Episode.
Actor Lee Jung-Jae thanked the fans of the show and the Emmys for their numerous nominations on his Instagram. The show has truly seeped into the hearts of people irrespective of their color, religion, and the languages they speak. A good show is all about that, after all. Squid Game follows the story of a large group of debted people who are swayed by the prospect of receiving a massive amount of prize money after willingly taking part in a series of deadly games. The drama takes the viewers on a rollercoaster ride of emotions by raising the stakes of inhumanity.
It is a game, we certainly do not want to play.
