Tesla, the automobile company which revolutionized the industry with its completely electric cars, is now looking to upgrade its AI to emerge with the first-ever humanoid robot.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, said the company is now working on the robot. He also revealed that it will use most of the devices that are used in Tesla automobiles, e.g., sensors, cameras, and tools for navigating the outside world. The prototype of the robot, named the Tesla Bot, will be ready by the next year.
Elon Musk made this announcement at the Tesla AI Day event where he also revealed about Dojo D1 chipset and discussed the full self-driving capabilities of Tesla Motors and its plans for the technology’s future.
During the 1st AI Day, Musk said that being the world’s largest robotics company, building a robot is the next logical step for Tesla.
He added that the company making pieces that would be useful for a humanoid robot. “If we don’t, someone else will- and we want to make sure it’s safe,” he claimed.
Specifications of the Robot
The height of the Tesla Bot will be like an average human, i.e., approximately 5 foot 8 inches tall. The weight will be around some 125 pounds.
The Bot will be able to move at a speed of 5mph. The Tesla website says that the robot will be efficient in performing tasks that are considered unsafe or are repetitive or boring to do.
It could easily do the work that people often find uninterested to do. It could also replace the physical labor as per the company since it would be used to perform household chores.
Elon Musk said that the Tesla Bot will help the company to leverage some of the hardware and software used in the company’s autopilot driver assistance programme.
He exclaimed, “Essentially, in the future, physical work will be a choice. If you want to do it, you can, but you won’t need to do it.”
Tesla is currently scouting for talent in various fields such as mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineering to help bring Tesla Bot into reality by leveraging the company’s AI expertise.
