Officials in the U.S. claim the Biden administration wants to lead the worldwide coalition against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine into a broader coalition. As to resist what it sees as a more severe, long-term danger to global order posed by China.
Mr. Antony Blinken, Secretary of State, defined the administration’s China strategy in his speech on Thursday. He lays out a three-pillar approach to competing with Beijing in a contest to define the 21st century’s economic and military balance.
While the administration scrambled to insist that Mr. Biden was not changing American policy and the officials said Mr. Blinken will restate that the U.S. has not changed its position. Mr. Blinken said that Washington still holds to its “One China” policy. Thus, it recognizes Beijing but allows for unofficial links with and arms sales to Taipei. The US considers Russia to be the most immediate and serious threat to international security. As the officials claimed that the administration considers China to be a greater concern. Thus, it mobilizing its resources, friends, and allies to counteract China’s growing assertiveness around the world.
The officials admitted that the United States has limited power to affect China’s intents and objectives directly. They claimed that the government would instead concentrate on influencing the strategic environment surrounding China.
Military action to assist Taiwan
During that tour, Mr. Biden stated that the US might intervene militarily to assist Taiwan in defending itself in the case of an invasion by China, which considers the island as a rebel province.
According to officials, Mr. Blinken argued that the international response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine serves as a model for dealing with China’s efforts. As to create a new and unpredictable world order to replace the rules and institutions that have guided international relations since World War II’s end.
“China is the one country that has the intention as well as the economic, technological, military, and diplomatic tools to push a different vision of international order.”
According to the officials, Mr. Blinken argued that the administration plans to use its success in collecting support for Ukraine against Russia to unify US allies and partners against China. The approach also includes investments in domestic infrastructure and technology. As well as increased diplomatic outreach to potentially susceptible countries, according to officials.
Biden administration reacted to Chinese moves in the western Xinjiang region, Hong Kong, Tibet, and the South China Sea. Therefore, they has mainly maintained its predecessor’s aggressive policy with China.
The administration sees possibilities for cooperation with Beijing. For example, in combating climate change, officials stressed the administration will not swap cooperation for compromising on its human rights and rule of law ideals.
