Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will take oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India. His tenure will be only two months and two weeks. In such a situation, there will be many big challenges in front of him as Chief Justice. However, along with challenges, he also has a legacy of 102 years in the judiciary. Today when he takes oath as CJI, then 3 generations will also be present at that time.
3 generations will be involved in the swearing-in
Actually, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit’s grandfather, Ranganath Lalit, was a lawyer in Solapur long before India’s independence. His 90-year-old Uday R. Lalit served as a judge of the Bombay High Court after his long career as a lawyer in Mumbai. His father Umesh Ranganath Lalit will also attend the swearing-in today. Apart from this, Justice Lalit’s wife Amita Lalit and their two sons, Harshad and Shreyash will also be present at the swearing-in. His wife runs a school in Noida. Both his sons have studied engineering, but Shreyash Lalit later took entry in the line of law. Shreyash’s wife Raveena is also a lawyer. Harshad Lalit works as a researcher and lives in America with his wife Radhika.
How was the tenure?
Let us tell you that Justice UU Lalit came to Delhi for the first time in the 1980s where he worked in the chamber of Attorney General Soli Sorabji for about five and a half years. Justice Lalit of Maharashtra started his practice in the Bombay High Court in 1983. After this he shifted to Delhi in 1986. Criminal matters became his strength soon thereafter, and he emerged as a designated senior advocate in the Supreme Court. His first major criminal case was the General Vaidya murder case. On 13 August 2014, he was made a judge of the Supreme Court directly from a lawyer.
Role in high-profile cases
He has participated in trials as Public Prosecutor of CBI in high-profile cases like allocation of 2G spectrum. Now he is being made Chief Justice for only 74 days and will replace Chief Justice Raman. During this time, apart from bench matters, he will also head the collegiums that appoint judges across the country.
