Russia is currently trying to encircle the twin cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychanks in Eastern Ukraine. The two cities are located on either side of the Siversky-Donetsk river. These are also the few remaining cities still under Ukrainian control after, most of the Donbas region fell to Russia. On Tuesday morning, Russian troops seized portions of Lyman, 30 miles west of Severodonetsk. They have also seized the village of Zolote near Lysychanks. Together these and an attack from the north of Severodonetsk forms a three-pronged Russian offensive.
Russian Offensive in its Most Active Phase- Ukraine
The Ukrainian defence ministry says this is the most active phase of the Russian War invasion of Ukraine. On their part, Russian Officials observe that the invasion will not end soon. One of them has even said that the invasion has no deadline. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has requested western nations to speed up their delivery of weapons and ammunition. He tweeted the Donbas offensive as the largest battle on European soil since the second world war.
So far the Russians have retreated from Kyiv and have dug themselves in outside Kharkiv. Their armies also have low morale due to a dramatic loss of Russian main battle tanks. The renewed Russian offensive in Donbas may compensate for Russian War setbacks. Surrounding Severodonetsk would trap its defenders and open the road to Kramatorsk, Ukraine’s military nucleus in Donbas.
Russia has Blockaded Ukrainian Wheat Exports
Apart from a renewed offensive in Donbas, Russian ships have also blocked the sea of Azov. This has prevented Ukraine from exporting grains, fertilizers and cooking gas to western nations. According to the United Nations, at least 25 million tons of wheat are trapped in Ukraine. The US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken has accused Russia of weaponizing food and holding supplies for military benefit.
