Ukraine’s president told congress on his visit on Wednesday that the tens of millions of dollars of aid that has been approved to help Ukraine fight Russia is not a charity but an investment in global security.
“Your money is not charity, it is an investment in the global,” he said
In his first meeting with the house of congress and his first visit to the US since the invasion of Russia in Ukraine, he told the member of the house of representative that he hopes they continue to support Ukraine on a bipartisan basis – a major decision the Republicans are to take on Jan 3, 2024.
President Zelensky’s speech needed to resonant with the House Republicans due to the growing skepticism among the members about sending aid to Ukraine.
Ukraine’s PM Zelensky’s Arrival in the house of Representative
Zelensky’s arrival was met with standing ovations in a nearly full chamber. Three representatives also held up the Ukrainian flag when he entered in. The house members and senators from both the parties cheered on Zelensky as he gave his speech. Certain parts of his speech such as the line “Ukraine holds its line and will never surrender” made the member stand on their feet as they cheered for him. In his speech he compared his country’s battle against Russia with battles like the second world war and the America revolution.
“It is a great honor for me to be at the U.S. Congress and speak to you and all Americans. Against all doom and gloom scenarios, Ukraine did not fall. Ukraine is alive and kicking,” said Zelensky.
“We defeated Russia in the battle for the minds of the world,”
“I’m glad that President Biden supported our peace initiative today. Each of you today ladies and gentlemen can assist in the implementation to ensure that American leadership remains solid, bicameral, and bipartisan,” Zelensky said to the house.
There has been no signs of a peace talk between Russia and Ukraine although Zelensky said he discussed a 10-point Ukrainian peace formula with Biden.
Ukrainian President Zelensky is one among the long list of world leaders who have had the opportunity to address the joint meeting at the senate and house. This was a tradition that was started in 1874 when the Hawaiian king Kalakaua first visited the house and addressed the senate. Many more world leaders have visited the house of representatives in the past including the former Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 and most recently Pope Francis in 2015.
