At least 16 civilians were killed in one of the most war torn regions of Darfur in Sudan, the fighting started in mid-April and it’s spreading at a great pace. In the recent developments there was news of a sniper targeting local civilians.
The Darfur Bar Association which is a Sudanese lawyers’ organization in the country since 1995 has stated that the situation is going out of the hands, the group which got the award for Democracy is reckless over the matter. The association has faced various challenges during Omar-Al-Bashir rule. Few days back at least 22 people were killed and many injured in the shelling attacks.
The two parties involved in the chaos are the Sudanese Armed Force led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Al Burhan- and the other faction RSF(the paramilitary group) led by Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. Interestingly both used to be on the same side until the coup was staged.
SUDAN GLIMPSE OF PAST
Burhan gained more power after the 2021 coup but Hemdti was also on good gains but there were regular power struggles, Burhan wanted RSF to be under army command and this rivalry took a wrong shape eventually.
They’re now even trying to erase each other’s presence. The thing to note is that RSF has a good hold in all the country’s major and good experiences. Most of the fighting is concentrated around the Capital Khartoum.
RSF has control on infrastructure, power plants and even the government institutions. 15% of the population has fled the country of around 1.4 million people especially to nearby poor countries which do have more problems like Chad etc.
Interestingly there was no delegation either from civilian or any structural side form Sudan since IGAD(Intergovernmental Authority of Developments).
This seems tangible and rather a weak point to approve .
RSF has been accused of terrorising people, robbing and looting, even basic facilities seem to be sanctioned away, in one horrific incident 71 Children and babies died due to acute starvation. The UN states that the country eventually will lose every bit if the situation is not under control, there is a total ethnic cleansing going on in West Darfur which was once seen in Rwanda.
A old rebellion got the ignition again and it’s much worse now in 2003 a rebellion took place and led by non-Arabs against the government of Omar-Bashir a strong Arab led government, in response recruiting fighters were sent and it was a havoc and they were known as Janjaweed, insurgency was stopped but at a great loss of humanity not even animals being spared. One third population of Darfur was rather killed, raped, burned or even cease to exist.
And this Janjaweed was rebranded as Rapid Support Forces(RSF) and aligned with the army. They have a strong hold on the gold mines a great source of revenue for them.
EGYPT’S PEACE FOR SUDAN’S WAR
In the recent event Egypt called the leaders from the Central African Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Libya, Ethiopia and South Sudan(IGAD block) as well as the Arab League and the AU Commission Chairperson to Cairo, The summit was a clear indication by Egypt to dominate its leadership on Sudan, after it had been excluded from peace efforts by the US & KSA. Egypt’s PM called for negotiations between the parties as well as an attractive and inclusive dialogue with political parties.
There was a strong voice regarding the external countries interfering with the country’s military positions.Well a long time ago the USA stopped its $700 million aid to Sudan because of the coup which shocked everyone .The United States also said they had no intel regarding the power seizure at that time .
Interestingly there was no delegation either from civilian or any structural side from Sudan since IGAD(Intergovernmental Authority of Developments). This seems tangible and rather a weak point to approve. The conflicts seem to grow and in no position to stop.
