Water, the most essential element required for the survival of mankind, has been derailing from its natural state of late. People are to blame for polluting and using up all of the water that is available to them.
Nothing remains the same, not even natural resources. Research has proven that without human interference, natural resources will be modified, but not at the rate they do at the hands of humans. The tendency to use everything for our own gain hurts nature so much that it can’t be fixed.
Monitoring changes in the environment and in our surroundings reduces the chances of depletion through the enhancement of better preventive measures. There is nothing precaution cannot prevent. But it comes late in the criterion of usage of natural resources. Water resources fall under this one category.
Of the entire level of water availability, only 0.03% of the earth’s water sources can be utilized by humans. With such a small part of the growing population of such a big planet, precautions must be taken.
World Water Monitoring Day
Resource depletion and prevention initiatives have been founded and run all across the globe. It is the prevalent issue of the vastly developing human population which has prompted such steps. One of which happens to be World Water Monitoring Day.
This day is observed every year on September 18th around the world. The main goal of the day is to raise awareness about water and its resources, as well as the problems that come from overusing and misusing water and how to fix them.
The event is a chance to talk about how important it is in parts of the world where it is hard to find, as well as how to use and apply it for a better environment and climate change.
Twist of the Day
Any particular date that is celebrated globally takes all the assets from around the world into its discussion. The twist of World Water Monitoring Day is the fact that it provides awareness to the public of their local water bodies and factors related to them. It is not what’s in the sea or ocean, which is unavailable to local residents of rural or urban dwellings because of their geographical placement, but rather what’s in the local reservoir.
It provides a step to protect at the ground or primary level of usage. The turntables have held people accountable for the extremes that water resources have brought about.
Who made this possible?
Back in 2003, America’s Clean Water Foundation took the initiative of World Water Monitoring Day in order to promote the importance of water testing. It is up to the people who live in the country and get their water from the city taps or bore wells dug in their yards to figure out how clean the water is.
Many complaints were received by the foundation regarding tap water acidity. It was found to be of greater consequence than expected. When we receive from municipal sources, we believe it to be of a level for human consumption. We do not observe its acidity, pH levels, or for other impurities. This became the reason behind this water initiative by the foundation.
At first, it was decided that this day would be held every year on October 18. However, because it gets very cold in many parts of the world in October, it was moved to September.
Reasons for problems
The major causes behind such problems’ existence are:
- Human exploitation of the resources available
- Climate change
- Non-biodegradable products in the water bodies
- Lack of water incentives for farming
- Lack of improved water management
Our initiative
In order to facilitate the survival of usable reservoirs, we need to arm ourselves with a positive approach to sustainable living. Outrunning any element that hinders the required pace for better management is the key. This can be achieved through better management at the smaller levels.
There is no such thing as a free dinner. We must accept responsibility for creating an environmental imbalance and work to restore it. It is upon us to fix the problems we face due to our own negligence at the initial stage of usage. The criterion of abundance pushes us away from considering nature as equal.
Nature can survive without us, but we cannot. It is high time we accept that. With signs of water bodies drying up, melting icecaps, flash floods, and other natural events happening outside of a certain range, it is important to act quickly and in the right way.
Takeaway
With the presence of initiatives and programs like World Water Monitoring Day, we are made aware of water problems around the globe. This day emphasizes our personal role in water management and prevention. Even now, we hope that all the water bodies will stay alive and grow, so they can keep giving us water for many generations to come.
