Ukraine’s President claims that his nation was left to battle Russia on its own after Russia began a large-scale invasion that killed over 130 Ukrainians on the first day.
On Thursday, Russia started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launching airstrikes on cities and military bases and deploying troops and tanks in three directions in an attack that threatened to rewrite the post-Cold War global security order.
“We have been left alone to defend our state,” Volodymyr Zelensky said after midnight in a moving video message to the country. “Who is ready to fight alongside us? I don’t see anyone. Who is ready to give Ukraine a guarantee of NATO membership? Everyone is afraid,” he added.
According to Zelensky, 137 “heroes” were killed, including 10 military officers and 316 injured. All border guards on the Zmiinyi Island, taken over by Russians in the Odesa area, were killed. Zelensky also claimed that Russian “sabotage groups” had reached Kyiv’s capital, urging residents to be watchful and adhere to a curfew.
Before his speech, Zelensky tweeted, “Russia has embarked on a path of evil, but Ukraine is defending itself and won’t give up its freedom.” “The fate of the country depends fully on our army, security forces, all of our defenders,” he said at the end of his address. He also stated that Moscow had expressed an interest in discussing Ukraine’s neutral status.
