In India choice of career is something that is taken very seriously by the whole family, sometimes relatives are also asked to join the process of decision making
Is it really something to do with the family when it comes to choosing one’s career or stream? or is it an individual decision to choose one’s own stream for their career?Â
The answer always favors the individual choice one should make for the subjects that they have to study and pursue for the rest of their life.Â
But is that favored in Indian households? The answer here is an absolute no. That is the reality, Indian families specifically involve themselves in the decision-making process which includes their child’s education, marriage, and career.Â
Here is why it is wrong in one or the other way, first including a teenager or adult’s decision-making too deeply and too often can hamper their overall decision-making process. For life’s big decision they would have to depend on family cause they themselves are conditioned into that process.Â
Children, teenagers, and adults should slowly be taught to make their own decisions so that it would prepare them to make the relatively big decisions of life.Â
Second, If the students have to study a particular stream or subject that they don’t welcome as a field of interest the rates of failing in the field are very high.Â
Even suicide rates of students are increasing because of the imposition of Career choices on students which is in most cases forced into the students by their parents only.Â
Parents and relatives are also involved in this structural thinking given by society which worships certain subjects like science and commerce as they have job opportunities that are for years serving society as a way to respective career options.Â
That’s the reason most parents are because the social pressure force themselves and their children to inculcate what society is appreciating.Â
Career opportunities like humanities which includes psychology, Sociology, history, political science, fine arts, and home science are marked according to society as weak subjects.Â
Do you think these subjects are really weak as termed by society? No, subjects that come under humanities should be the most important part of education.Â
Subjects like Psychology and sociology which are the study of individuals and society are something that helps one to understand the society in a better way, things like inequality existing in society will get decreased automatically once more and more people start educating themselves.Â
Usually, when it comes to money and respect. These fields also are the ones where government jobs are available as an option. A lot of people tend to give exams of UPSC in India which is a competitive exam. Other than this there are a lot of career options available for everyone in the field.
It is often observed the students are the one who needs humanities as their subjects but they are taken aback by their parents and relatives who see these subjects as ‘weak’
Students sometimes also revolt to change their career options which are actually something one shouldn’t even ask for because this is something basic.Â
If the student has to study a subject for 4-5 years and choose a career option related to that particular field, don’t you think this is something that should be decided by the students only?Â
Discussion of things like what to choose as subjects or streams with parents and taking advice from relatives is normal until and unless they start forcing an Individual to do as they say and to choose the stream that they welcome
