You are what you think
The Bible (Proverbs 23:7) tells us that as a man “thinketh in his heart, so is he.”heart
We often try to change our world through fitness regimes, outdoor activities, nutrition, and many other sources. However, we often forget that thoughts in both our hearts and minds affect our bodies. It is the belief system that determines our world i.e., our destinations.
Why change our thoughts to determine our world?
We often forget in our hectic schedules what thoughts are running in our minds. Every thought is a seed that slowly grows into a sycamine tree if not dealt with. In this era, everyone wants a healthy, peaceful, and successful life but there is a price that has to be paid for it. It is easy to circulate mental health-related content for us on social media platforms but it is difficult to open up about every thought which can lead us to mental health-related issues.
Suppose, a colleague in your office unjustly treats you and you retaliate which gives you a sense of momentary victory in the short run, and in the long run, many such incidents come along and you keep the hurt inside and choose not to forgive. Such types of many more incidents in your life can develop unforgiveness, anger, bitterness, and resentment in a person’s mind and heart which further affects the body.
Yes, it’s okay to not feel fine, it’s okay to feel sad but what about the prolonged cases of mental illnesses? What about the person going into self-pity during minor incidents and affecting the entire life? What about the diseases caused by mental health issues during mental health treatment? Can mental health treatment be accessible and affordable to everyone at each minute of their lives? Is it not necessary to deal with every thought?
How can our world be changed?
“Our thoughts determine our emotions(think, choose, feel), emotions determine our decisions, decisions determine our actions, actions determine our habits, habits determine our characters and characters determine our destinations.”
Suppose, after multiple incidents of failures in your life, you start thinking that you are a failure and you keep saying this to yourself. The thoughts of failure running in your mind slowly take root in your heart and then, the belief system of you being a failure affect every situation in your life and you keep thinking no matter how much effort I put to achieve my goals; I cannot change my destination.
If you have to change your destination then your inner person needs to be strengthened. Your outside circumstances in life cannot be changed if you don’t change from within. If you have failed, and you evaluate your mistakes and work to improve them and at the same time, keep telling yourself that you are a successful person then slowly you will see yourself as the same. After some time, the other people will also see you as a successful person.
Healthy practices to change our thoughts
Yoga, mindfulness, gaining spiritual knowledge, guided meditations, and many more practices can only be helpful if a person tries to make it a habit to incorporate them into one’s life.
Every time you think of yourself as a fool, replace that thought of you being wise, or every time you think of yourself as poor, think of yourself as rich. Every thought of unforgiveness, bitterness, and anger is deadly for a person’s body and it can be replaced by the thought of forgiveness and love.
Meditation can be helpful to filter the negative thoughts and keep the positive thoughts. Yoga breathing techniques can also be beneficial for a person to focus on the breath I.e., the consciousness, and focus just on the present moments.
