Union Minister S. Jaishankar will make a statement on ‘Operation Ganga’ in the second session of the budget session in the parliament
The union government launched operation Ganga on February 24 to evacuate Indian students from war-torn Ukraine. The minister will be addressing the evacuation of stranded Indians and it’s stand in the Russia-Ukraine war.
“Students from Sumy are returning today to India. Their evacuation was particularly challenging. Operation Ganga, undertaken at the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has delivered due to both leadership and commitment,” tweeted Jaishankar this morning.
The minister also thanked everyone who helped in the success of the mission. “Our particular gratitude to the authorities in Ukraine and Russia as well as the Red Cross for the evacuation assistance,” the note read.
Till now, the Indian government has rescued 20000 citizens with the help of 80+ rescue flights. Via the operation, India also managed to rescue citizens of its neighbouring countries – Bangladesh and Nepal.
PM Narendra Modi earlier this month sent four union ministers – Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kiren Rijiju, Hardeep Singh Puri and General VK Singh to ensure safe evacuation of its citizens.
During the operation, buses and trains brought Indians to the western borders of Ukraine and they were flown back to India via locations like Bucharest, Budapest, Suceava, and Warsaw.
The last batch of over 600 students who were evacuated from Sumy was brought back to India via Poland.The second session of the parliament will begin on March 14 and will continue till April 8. After Devi Shakti, Afghanistan operation, this is India’s largest evacuation drive to bring back its stranded citizens.
