The New York crowd supported teenage star Carlos Alcaraz as he put on a show against Jannik Sinner in the marathon men’s singles quarterfinal at US Open 2022 on September 7. With several spectacular victories, including a behind-the-back backhand pass, the 19-year-old had the New York crowd cheering in excitement and amazement.
Alcaraz saved a match point as he overcame Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (0-7), 7-5, 6-3 as the the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd enjoyed the high-caliber action as they saw the second-longest match in US Open history, which lasted five hours and fifteen minutes,
Carlos Alcaraz will face Frances Tiafoe, a fan favourite in his own country, in the semi-final, so he might not be the more well-liked of the two semi-finalists when he takes the field. Given the form that Tiafoe has shown, Alcaraz admitted that playing against the American in the semifinal will not be a simple task.
The 24-year-old appears to be finally living up to the hype after being hailed as the future of American tennis. He defeated 9th seed Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals in straight sets after defeating 22-time Grand Slam victor Rafael Nadal in a 4-setter.
In their only meeting in 2021, Tiafoe triumphed against Alcaraz in straight sets on clay in Barcelona.
On Thursday when Alcaraz talked with the media then he admitted that it’s gonna be really, really tough against Frances Tiafoe in the semis. He acknowledges the skills of Frances as he had defeated Rafa Nadal, Rublev in three sets. Alcaraz added that he loves the amazing atmosphere at the court, the fans, the crowd and he will give his best against Frances.
Since Rafael Nadal in 2005, Alcaraz has advanced to the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament, and he is also the youngest player to do it since Pete Sampras in 1990.
Since his spectacular run on the red dirt, Alcaraz was in danger of going the distance at Grand Slams, but he faltered in the French Open quarterfinal. Although Sinner defeated the Spanish kid in the Wimbledon fourth round, Alcaraz appears to be in top form on the hard courts of New York.
Before the long match against Sinner, Alcaraz defeated previous champion Marin Cilic in a five-set match to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal.
