A tragic hit-and-run incident claimed the life of a young student from Chandigarh University (CU), Gharuan, as an unidentified driver of an SUV collided with his motorcycle near Rurka village in Kharar on Sunday. The Chandigarh Police swiftly responded to the incident, registering a case under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving), and 427 (mischief causing damage to property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the unidentified SUV driver, who was operating a Delhi registered Mahindra XUV-500.

The victim, identified as Maurya Attri, was a 20-year-old resident of Shivjot Enclave and hailed from Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh. A bright computer science student at Chandigarh University, Maurya’s life was tragically cut short by the reckless actions of the yet-to-be-identified SUV driver.
According to the police, the incident unfolded when the victim’s uncle, who had accompanied Maurya to Gharuan for some personal business, was following him in his own vehicle on their return journey to Kharar. Maurya was riding his motorcycle ahead of his uncle’s car. As they reached the vicinity of Rurka village, a speeding SUV approached from the wrong side of the road, colliding with Maurya’s bike. The impact caused him to be thrown onto the road, resulting in severe injuries. Shockingly, the SUV driver fled the scene without offering any assistance or aid.
Witnessing the accident, Maurya’s uncle acted swiftly and rushed him to the nearby civil hospital. Tragically, despite the efforts of medical professionals, Maurya was declared brought dead upon arrival. The incident has left the entire Chandigarh University community and the victim’s family in a state of profound grief and shock.
Following the incident, the Chandigarh Police wasted no time in launching a thorough investigation into the hit-and-run case. They promptly registered a case against the unidentified SUV driver under Sections 304-A, 279, and 427 of the IPC, which encompass charges of causing death by negligence, rash driving, and mischief causing damage to property, respectively.
