Oleksii Reznikov, the defence minister of Ukraine, has announced his resignation. Mr. Reznikov had been serving as the defence minister from the start of the war. The removal of Mr. Reznikov was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, citing the need for “new approaches” in the defence ministry.
The Russia Ukraine war
On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. The invasion has caused Europe’s fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II, with more than 8 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and a quarter of the population displaced.
The war has also had a significant impact on the global economy, causing energy prices to rise and disrupting supply chains. The United States and its allies have imposed severe sanctions on Russia in response to the invasion, which have further damaged the Russian economy.
It is not clear how the war will end . However, it is clear that the war has had a devastating impact on Ukraine and the global community.
Anti Corruption drive in Ukraine
The removal of Mr. Reznikov coincides with a broader anti-corruption initiative in Mr. Zelensky’s government, which has been viewed as crucial to Ukraine’s aspirations to join Western organisations like the EU. Ukraine has been very corrupt but due to recent intiatives has seen its ranking improve.
There have been other scandals at the ministry of defence involving the purchase of supplies and equipment for the army at exorbitant costs, despite the fact that Mr. Reznikov is not personally charged with wrongdoing.
Vyacheslav Shapovalov, resigned earlier this year . Even the former defence minister held his position ,though it was tremendously difficult .
New Ukraine Minister of defence
Rustem Umerov, a prominent member of the Crimean Tatar community who will soon be appointed as Ukraine’s new minister of defence, has defended his nation in delicate talks with Russia.
Umerov’s family was deported to Soviet Uzbekistan under Stalin, where he was born. When the Tatars were given permission to return in the 1980s and 1990s, his family relocated to Crimea in Ukraine. The Muslim, 41, entered the telecom industry in 2004 and was chosen to serve in parliament in 2019.
He served as co-chair of the Crimea Platform there, a global diplomatic initiative intended to undo Russia’s takeover of the peninsula in 2014.He has served as Mustafa Dzhemilev’s advisor for many years, the legendary Crimean Tatar leader.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in a video message on Sunday that MPs would be asked to vote on Umerov’s nomination this week. He claimed that since the legislature “knows this person well, Mr. Umerov does not need any further introductions.”(Source: The Guardian)
Ukraine counteroffensive
Following the acquisition of more sophisticated weapons from Western partners, Ukraine launches a brutal and sluggish counteroffensive.Top Ukrainian generals said on Sunday that their forces had penetrated a crucial line of Russian defences in the country’s south despite the fact that progress on the frontline had been slow.
A number of attempted drone assaults on Russian territory were recorded overnight, according to Russia.Early on Monday, the defence ministry reported shooting down two drones over the bordering Ukrainian province of Kursk.
Roman Stravoit, the region’s governor, also noted on Sunday that a non-residential building in Kurchatov had caught fire due to debris from a damaged drone.Russia also conducted a 3.5-hour midnight assault on the southern Ukrainian region of Odesa, according to the governor.
Since the Black Sea grain deal fell through in July, the Danube ports have emerged as Ukraine’s primary export route. Since leaving the agreement, Moscow has attacked the Danube frequently.
Zelensky whose major claim to eliminate corruption is one of his major reasons for his rise to power. The change of ministers would no doubt affect the war.
