- China in the mediator’s role
- China’s undeniable friendship with Russia
During a recent conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang expressed his worries about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
He emphasised the need for discussions toward a political resolution with Moscow.
In an unusual phone call, Qin Gang spoke with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and conveyed China’s desire for the negotiations to lead to a peaceful solution to the conflict.
According to the statement, Qin Gang informed Kuleba that “China has always maintained an impartial position on the Ukraine matter.”
As per the reports, Qin Gang also emphasised that China is dedicated to supporting peace and progress while urging the international community to facilitate conditions that could lead to successful peace talks.
After the phone call, Kuleba took to Twitter and stated that “he and Qin had deliberated on the importance of upholding the principle of territorial integrity.”
Kuleba also highlighted that he had stressed the significance of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s “Peace Formula” in putting an end to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
Ukraine has released its 10-point plan for peace, which includes a demand for the complete removal of Russian troops from Ukrainian soil and the implementation of stringent measures by the International Tribunal to hold Moscow accountable for its acts of aggression.
China in the mediator’s role
The unusual involvement in the Ukrainian conflict comes after the country presented a 12-point proposal for a “Ukraine crisis”.
China presents itself in these documents as a nation that acts as a mediator for peace, advocating for both parties to resolve their conflict through peaceful dialogue and discussions to restore peace to their borders.
During the Munich Security Conference, Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, expressed his worries about China’s providing military equipment and supplies to Russia. China responded by calling it mere speculation” and stating that it has never provided and will never provide arms to Russia.
Since Country recently mediated discussions that led to Iran and Saudi Arabia reconciling and restoring their full diplomatic relations, it has reinforced its image as an impartial mediator.
Undeniable friendship with Russia
However, while China has shown an inclination towards resolving the conflict in Ukraine, its efforts face a challenge due to its declaration of a friendship with Russia that ‘knows no boundary’.
Both nations maintain that their strategic alliances are not directed against any specific country but rather reflect a natural alignment between two nations that embrace multipolarity and the democratisation of international relations.
they chose to abstain from voting on the Ukraine resolution calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and also did not vote against two resolutions adopted at the UN General Assembly in the previous year.
China went on to criticise western countries for imposing unilateral sanctions on Russia, which has a ‘boomerang effect’ on sanction-imposing countries as well. China advised the west to abandon the ‘cold war mentality’ and respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all countries.
Beijing has also accused NATO and the United States of instigating Russia’s assault on Ukraine.
Foreign Minister Qin Gang hinted that the United States was delaying peace initiatives in Ukraine to prolong the conflict for its advantage.
During the news conference, Qin Gang suggested that an unseen force was propelling the continuation and escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and exploiting the crisis to further a specific geopolitical aim.
China’s President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expecting to meet, however as of now, there has been no confirmation of the exact dates, though it is expected to happen as early as next week.
