India will not denounce Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine because it requires Russian weapons for a stand-off with China, and authorities in New Delhi are sure that the US would not exert significant pressure, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Since the Cold War, Moscow has been one of India’s largest weapons suppliers, providing more than half of its fighter jets and all of its tanks. Russia has backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s harsh Kashmir policies internationally panned.
According to the persons who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak to the media, those issues prevent Modi from publicly chastising Putin alongside the US, Europe, and other nations. Over the weekend, India joined China and the United Arab Emirates in abstaining from voting on a draught resolution denouncing the invasion at the United Nations Security Council, which Russia ultimately vetoed.
India requires Moscow’s diplomatic and military assistance in dealing with China, mainly after battling near their Himalayan border. Over the last two years, India and China have been at odds, with both sides building armies, tanks, and artillery pieces.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia inherited its close relationship with India which resulted in both nations sharing a special relationship.
