Time magazine named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as the ‘2022 Person of the Year’ in recognition of the nation’s resistance to Russia’s invasion. The honour is given to an occasion or an individual who in the last 12 months, is thought to have had the greatest impact on world events.
Edward Felsenthal, the editor-in-chief of Time, stated that Volodymyr Zelensky galvanised the globe in a way we haven’t seen in decades, whether the struggle for Ukraine inspires one with optimism or with terror.
President Zelensky shares the 2022 title with “the spirit of Ukraine,” which Mr. Felsenthal claimed was personified by the countless individuals within and outside the nation. Felsenthal stated that Zelensky’s choice to remain in Kyiv and mobilise support rather than leave proved pivotal in the weeks that followed the start of the Russian bombing on February 24. Ukraine’s President was everywhere, from his first 40-second Instagram post on February 25, demonstrating that his Cabinet and civil society were intact and functioning to daily speeches made remotely to venues like the houses of Parliament, the World Bank, and the Grammy Awards.
Zelensky’s unusual professional path has propelled him from a comedian to a wartime president in the span of just a few years. At the age of 41, he was elected as the President of Ukraine, in April 2019.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, received the honour from Time, last year. He was included on the shortlist once more this year, along with Iranian protesters, the US Supreme Court, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Iranian protesters honoured
The Iranian women and the protest movement were recognised as the magazine’s ‘Heroes of the Year’. The magazine’s cover featured a picture of three young Iranian women linking arms in defiance of the government. Azadeh Moaveni, an Iranian-American journalist, authored the piece praising their movement. According to Moaveni, the movement they’re heading is educated, liberal, secular, reared with greater aspirations, and anxiousness for normality.
Other titles of 2022
The most popular girl band from South Korea, Blackpink, was voted Entertainer of the Year. The James Webb Space Telescope and its director, Gregory Robinso, were both honoured as the Innovator of the year.
The magazine also selected Michelle Yeoh as the ‘Icon of the Year’ and New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge as ‘Athlete of the year ‘.
