Songs were mandatory in movies, but as time changed, the narrative changed, and the way the story keeps you at the edge of the seat music is no more seen as an important criterion for a film’s success.
Songs. Movies change minds and leave us inspired where songs stay in our hearts and touch our souls. Our Indian radios lost to Ceylon Radio only because of songs. They are purely entertainment.
There are movies that flop but the songs of the movie are super hit. Whereas there are also movies that are very successful even without songs. If you take Hollywood movies, none of them have songs.
They do not believe in the concept of songs. They only have singers releasing their albums and singles. Even the concept of Indian movies having so many songs is fascinating.
The movies like Bombay Velvet are completely based on music and songs. There are very few that don’t have songs in them. Let’s look at a few of them.
With the lead roles played by Urmila Matondkar and Manoj Bajpayee, the movie Bhoot had only one song. The song was also a promotional song. It was directed by Ram Gopal Varma’s directorial supernatural horror movie released in 2003. It joined the Rs.7 crore club while the lead actress grabbed several awards for her acting in the film.
Black was released in 2005 and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The movie is based on a deaf and dumb girl in a relationship with her teacher. The movie is inspired by the life of American author Hellen Keller. With no music a part of the movie, it managed to collect a gross of Rs. 8 crores.
The 2008 masterpiece was directed by Neeraj Pandey. The drama thriller starred Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah. It was remade in English featuring Ben Kingsley as ‘A Common Man’. The movie earned Rs. 9 crores even after not having any song as part of the movie.
4. The Lunchbox:
Starring Irfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur, the internationally acclaimed romantic drama was written and directed by Ritesh Batra. The movie shows the lead actors as the odd couple that falls in love over letters and lunchboxes just like the old school style. The movie crossed Rs. 20 crores in India.
5.The Kashmir Files:
The critically acclaimed 2022 film ended up in controversy. It was directed by Vivek Agnihotri and starred Anupam Kher. The public demand made the movie screen in 4000 screens, which earlier was 600 screens. The low-budget movie managed to earn 10 times more than its budget and has made a history that movies can run even without any songs.
Starring John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri, Rashi Khanna, Prakash Belwadi, and Siddarth Basu, the movie was released in 2013. The story talks about the assassination of late President Rajiv Gandhi. John plays the good cop in the film. The movie did pretty well at the box office.
Vicky Kaushal, the hero himself took the narrative forward without any lead actress and no songs in the movie. The 2021 movie was directed by Shoojit Sircar. The movie talks about the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre by British officials.
In which Bhagat Singh was assassinated to take his revenge Udham (Vicky Kaushal) kills Michael O’Dwyer. The blockbuster made a collection of Rs. 78 to 80 Crores at the box office.
The directors of these movies are very much confident that a powerful cast could do magic even without songs. And the audience in return is seen to love these kinds of movies. Movies without songs.
Sometimes not the song but the silence plays a great role in the movie getting all the appreciation. Because they are meant to add atmosphere and experience to enjoy the aid film. Silence exactly adds to the mood that the filmmakers are looking for.
